National President Vaughan attends Troon 41 Club Burns Supper

posted 18 Jan 2012 08:14 by Donald Watson

A debating club founded on 11th November 1780, by Burns, Gilbert Burns, Hugh Reid, Alexander Brown, Thomas Wright, William M'Gavin and Walter Mitchell, all young men of Tarbolton parish.

Their aims were to 'forget their cares and labour in mirth and diversion', to promote friendship and to improve their minds with meaningful debate. The club met regularly.

At this first meeting, in the public house of John Richard, Burns was unanimously elected president for the night. Rules were drawn up, the tenth and most significant of which read: 'Every man proper for a member of this Society, must have a frank, honest, open heart; above anything dirty or mean; and must be a professed lover of one or more of the female sex. No haughty, self-conceited person, who looks upon himself as superior to the rest of the Club, and especially no mean spirited, worldly mortal, whose only will is to heap up money shall upon any pretence whatever be admitted.' Somewhat like Round Table!

229 years later it was the turn of Troon 41 Club and to mark the occasion National President Vaughan Harris was invited to attend. The historic location, the presence of memorabilia and various pictures and drawings of our National Bard, hightened our enjoyment of the evening.

Ken Donald has been appointed as National Councillor for Region2. He is a member of Edinburgh and District 41 Club and a Past President of Round Table.
Ken is a keen golfer and plays at Kingsknowe Golf Club and at Dornoch.

Well known to many RT'ers I am sure that he will soon become known to many 41 er's during his period in office

Allan Thomson demits Office

The AGM in Ipswich saw our National Councillor for Region 2 demitting office. Allan had decided that, on approaching a certain age, that it was time to devote his energies to other activities.
He has devoted much of his considerable talent do promoting Round Table and 41 Club over a considerable number of years.
Area Chairman for Round Table, Deputy National Councillor to David Illingworth, Conference Committee for the Edinburgh National Conference, culminating in his appointment as National Councillor for Region 2 in 2007.
He has an even longer association with Scouting in the North East and I believe he served as Commissioner.
The list goes on but in listing Allan's achievements, it would be remiss not to acknowledge Moira's (his wife) as Area Chair for Tangent in the North of Scotland.
Do not forget them being founder members of Nomads the 41 Club caravanning section.
I do think that their most memorable event was their memebrship of the New Zealand Tour party a few weeks ago, earthquake and all.
In conclusion I should like to express my appreciation to him for his friendship and voluntary assistance during our term as National Councillors.

Stranraer 41 Club - A Very Refreshing AGM

posted 8 Apr 2011 05:36 by Donald Watson

Three Chairmen.
How refreshing to attend an AGM that had a real buzz to it. The photograph to the right typifies what this club is about. 24 members with a strong element of ex-Round Tablers who have joined the club in the last few years. In the photograph are from L - R Hugh Aitken who was a founding member on 30th March 1976. Sam Scobie Chairman 2010 - 2012 who seemed a bit perturbed that bthere would be no election at this year's AGM as they serve a 2 year term of office, he decided that it would be a good idea to appoint officers-elect this AGM and confirm the appointments at the next AGM, ergo John Parker was elected (appointed) Chairman Elect.
The Club have a safari Burns Supper, each course is taken at a different members house, buses provide the transport between houses.
A joint barbecue with Newton Stewart 41 Club is arranged for the summer, and a return event planned, their own barbecue will be on a Friday night rather than a Saturday to avoid conflicting with other events.
The club is also giving some consideration to holding a celebratory event for the longevity of the club, having missed the 35th Charter but there is always time left this year to mount a celebration

Milngavie & Bearsden AGM

Good to attend the AGM where there was some serious discussion after the National Councillor took too long to elicit the voting intentions for the club as he will act as their proxy at the AGM.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation to Ronnie Greig with a Past Chairman's jewel in recognition of his sterling work over the last two years.
To summarize, briefly, the club thought that Community Welfare and Shelter Boxes should be left to Rotary. And they resolved by an overwhelming majority that the Sports Officer should continue to plan for a wide range of activities and the job should not be renamed as Golf Convenor.

A really enjoyable evening was organised by Forfar and District 41 Club in celebration of their 50th Anniversary Dinner. The event was held at the local golf club and Allan Thomson, the National Councillor for Region 2, and I both enjoyed an evening of fun and fellowship in which the members were able to meet up with old friends and swap stories of their time in Table. The food, venue and staff were excellent and we were very well looked after.

The highlight of the evening was a presentation to Alan Garrick in recognition of his long term support of the club (he has been a member continuously for 41 years) and he was appointed as the club’s first “Life Honorary President”.
